Senate adopts amended timetable for 2019 elections

The Nigerian Senate has adopted the amended timetable for the 2019 elections.

The lawmakers resolved to adopt the amendment after debate on the recommendations of a conference committee report on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Act.

The amended act will ensure state governorship and house of assembly elections hold before presidential elections.

The Independent national Electoral Commission, had fixed February 16, 2019 as the day for Presidential and National Assembly Elections while March 2, 2018 was chosen for Governorship, State Assembly and FCT Area Council Elections.

However, the new amendment will change that.

According the amended law, National Assembly elections will hold on February 16, 2019 while Governorship, State Assembly and FCT Area Council Elections will hold on February 23.

March 2, 2018 was chosen as the date for Presidential elections.

The changes are still subject to approval by President Muhammadu Buhari.
