Populist incumbent Miloš Zeman, the country’s first directly-elected president, is running for a second term and is the current favourite.

The 73-year-old Eurosceptic, who recently blasted the EU over its immigration policy, is as loved as he is loathed but is expected to take home the majority of Czech votes.

Mr Zeman faces eight independent candidates including Jiří Drahoš, a 68-year-old pro-EU chemical engineer who is seen as the most viable threat to the existing presidency.

Another rival touted to do well is Michal Horacek, 65, a songwriter and businessman.

Former centre-right Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek and diplomat Pavel Fischer have also seen a rise in support in the final weeks.

When is the Czech election?

Czechs started voting at 2pm local time on Friday (1pm GMT) and will continue to visit polling stations until the same time on Saturday.

This weekend’s vote is classed as a first-stage vote, meaning that if there is no overall majority then a second round of elections will take place between January 26 and 27.

The most recent polls by TNS Kantar & Median have Mr Zehman winning the first round with 42.5 percent, compared to Jiří Drahoš with 27.5 percent.

What time will the results come in?

The Czech election 2018 results will be officially announced on Sunday. But the unofficial results should be known relatively soon after polls close on Saturday.

In the Czech parliamentary election in October, the polls closed at 2pm (1pm BST) on the second day of voting.

Exit polls were published within an hour. By 3pm 50 per cent of the ballots had been counted and by 4pm it was already clear that Prime Minister Andrej Babiš was going to win.

Why is the Czech election 2018 important?

Despite the role of president being largely ceremonial, the head of state does shape foreign policy.

Even more importantly, the president gets to choose the Czech Republic’s Prime Minister.
