As a source of inspiration for food, fashion, travel and more, Pinterest is second to none.
With millions of ‘pins’ sharing recipes, stylish outfits, homeware hacks and bucket-list holiday destinations, if you’re feeling stuck in a rut in any area of your life, browsing the visual discovery site will have you brimming with ideas in no time.
Plus, because Pinterest is so popular with lifestyle trendsetters, by looking at search data from the site, we can see what’s hot (and what’s not) at any given time.
To mark the Pinterest UK Awards, which honour original ideas from creators on the platform, the site’s editorial team has revealed the trends that have seen the biggest increase in searches over the last year.
Overall, they show a move towards sustainable living, whether that’s at home or when holidaying, while a retro aesthetic is on the rise in terms of fashion and interiors.
What else is new? Here are 10 lifestyle trends that have been growing in popularity in 2019…
1. Waste not, want not
As more and more people take steps to reduce their impact on the environment, food waste is a hot topic this year.
Pinners have been sharing recipes that help use up leftovers in tasty and interesting ways, from simple hacks, like using stale bread to make croutons, to using up canned goods that have been hanging around in the cupboard for too long.
2. Conscious travel
As younger generations put a focus on amassing experiences rather than material possessions, travel is a big priority for many, and while few of us want to give up holidays all together, we certainly want to do what we can to reduce our carbon footprint.
That’s led to the rise of ‘conscious travel’, opting for staycations or destinations closer to home, and choosing more sustainable activities when venturing abroad.
3. Eating with the seasons
Another way that people are looking to up their eco credentials in the kitchen is with seasonal eating, to make use of local produce and reduce the ‘food miles’ their fruit and veg has to travel.
From crunchy summer salads to autumn berry traybakes and hearty soups, there are delicious ways to eat with the seasons all year round.
4. Cleaning is cool
Chiming with the trend that favours experiences over possessions, millennials are looking to maximise their leisure time with handy cleaning hacks.
Whether it’s time-saving tips or a 30-minute cleaning schedule, these ideas will have your home looking spick and span quickly, so you can kick back and relax, or get out of the house sooner.
5. Astrology inspo
Whether you follow your horoscope religiously or just like the look of constellation prints, astrology-inspired decor is a major trend this year.
Not only that, some travellers are using their star sign to determine their next destination. Scorpios, for example, are recommended to travel to Greece this year, while Capricorns should head to the Maldives (lucky them).
6. Seaside decor
Since travel and escapism are high on the agenda in 2019, it’s no surprise that bringing the seaside into your home is also a big trend, with scalloped furniture, nautical touches and craft projects using shells.
7. Retro reinvented
They say that during turbulent times we take comfort in nostalgia, and that’s certainly evident with one of the year’s biggest food trends, which sees bakers inspired by childhood treats.
Retro recipes such as parma violet cheesecake and gluten-free hobnobs take traditional tuck-shop favourites and reinvent them for 2019.
8. Vegan chocolate bar twists
In another example of the nostalgia trend, clever cooks are inventing vegan recipes for popular chocolate bars.
From vegan raw ‘Snickers’ to raw ‘Twix’ bars, these tasty treats are made without animal-derived ingredients.
9. Relaxed tailoring
On the fashion front, tailoring has been a huge trend, but not the stuffy, buttoned-up type.
The best-dressed pinners are obsessed with soft tailoring, such as oversized blazers and relaxed trouser suits.
10. White out
Pale and interesting is the mantra for both fashion and beauty, as white comes to the fore.
And not just for summer. From frosty eye make-up looks to how to wear white in winter, style mavens are finding new ways to wear the chalky hue.
