A brand new chocolate café is set to open up in the heart of Hull city centre – and it’s a chocoholics dream.

White Rabbit Chocolatiers only opened their first ever Hull shop in Paragon Arcade at the end of last year but have closed their doors temporarily for a sweet new chocolate café to be built upstairs.

The chocolatiers first opened its Beverley store in 2004, and has since gone on to run a small but successful shop in Hull’s thriving Victorian arcade. It convinced them the time was now right to unleash a chocoholics paradise on the people of the city.

The venue, which will serve everything from chocolate desserts to ice creams and milkshakes, is expected to open in early to mid-July after the work is complete.

Explaining the concept, Ed Hawkes, managing director, said: “We’ll be doing hot chocolate, desserts, coffee, ice creams and milkshakes. We’ll sell anything a café would sell. It’s not only for chocolate but speciality coffee, tea and light bites.

“We’re going to have a full chocolate café upstairs. It’s something we wanted to go with when we got the unit but we ran out of time.

“The idea has come from the one we’ve got in Beverley.

“From talking to customers, we found a lot of them are from Hull and they asked if we could open a café nearer to them.

“We’re also doing a bit of a refurb downstairs and putting an ice cream counter in.”

The chocolatiers has built up an impressive reputation in its 15 years in business, which led them to making the leap to Hull at the end of last year after being approached by the arcade’s developers, Allenby Commercial.

Much of the plans are down to Mr Hawkes’ sister and business partner, Amy Fenner, who worked alongside another new face in Paragon Arcade to come up with the design.

We’ve created a Facebook group for people who live, work and play in Hull city centre. It will have all the latest on new shops that are opening, events taking place and developments around the town.

All eyes are on Hull as we continue as City of Culture to see how we take the next steps forward and this is the perfect place to explore that.

Don’t be shy – feel free to like, comment and share your own ideas and pictures, and let us know if anything pops up that you think is worth us reporting.

Interior design and furniture specialists Koda moved in to an empty unit facing Paragon Street in April and have already struck up a relationship with White Rabbit – to such an extent they have helped with the café’s design and will be showing off some of their furniture in the new venue.

“It will be a place where you can see their furniture in on display,” Mr Hawkes said.

“We’ve worked with Koda who have helped us with the design for the furniture upstairs.

“It’s the collaboration we always wanted and the community we always wanted.”
