Brittania hotels ranked worst chain in the UK again – unless you stay at Hull’s Royal Hotel

Britannia has been ranked the worst hotel chain in the UK for the seventh year in a row, but reviews of its hotel in Hull suggest it is the best of a bad bunch.

More than 8,000 guests reviewed 40 hotel chains for the Which? Travel rankings, scoring Britannia rock-bottom with a measly 39 per cent.

That was a long way off even the second-worst chain, easyHotel, which scored 58 per cent.

Guests were asked to rank the hotels based on different categories, including value for money, comfort and food and drink.

Britannia was given one-star ratings for almost every category and performed especially badly on cleanliness, with patrons calling the hotels “filthy” and “scruffy”.

Rory Boland, Which? Travel Editor, said: “There really is no excuse for the grubby bathtubs and filthy rooms that we have seen year after year with Britannia, so it is best to avoid them.”

Britannia, which has 61 hotels in the UK, declined to comment.

But according to recent reviews of the Royal Hotel in Ferensway, which is part of Britannia, the Hull hotel is performing better than most others in the chain.

On TripAdvisor, the hotel scores a respectable 3.5 out of five, a score equivalent to a ranking of ‘very good’ according to the site.

One reviewer said: “We stayed here for two nights and were really happy with its central location and value.

“This is a lovely old building with much history to it. It may be a little dated in places but see past that to the friendly staff, the cleanliness, value, good choice of breakfast and good rooms.”

They added that they had been staying when the hotel was evacuated over the weekend because of a suspected gas leak and said staff made alternative arrangements for them to keep them out of the cold and stayed with them until they were let back in.

Another guest reviewing the hotel in the past week said they “would recommend this hotel for its central location, lovely food in the dining room and extremely friendly staff.”

But there were some negative experiences reported by other visitors, with one person saying the bathroom light in their room was broken because of water “p*****g through the ceiling”.

While Britannia and easyHotel were at the bottom of the pile of the Which? Travel rankings, Premier Inn and Wetherspoon hotels were sitting pretty at the other end of the scale with customer scores of 79 per cent each.
