Meet the Baileys – the newest family to join the Coronation Street cast for 11 years.

The family-of-four will arrive on our screens in early June and will, of course, rub a few of the other character’s noses in it after moving into the Emily Bishop and Norris Cole’s old house.

They are the first black family to have moved to the street in the long-running soap and the first full family to arrive on the cobbles since the Windasses in 2008, reports the MEN.

Dad Edison is played by former Holby City actor Trevor Michael Georges, mum Aggie is played by former Doctors actress Lorna Laidlaw and their two sons Michael and James are played by former CBeebies presenter Ryan Russell and West End performer Nathan Graham.

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod said: “Manchester is a city which has a large proportion of black residents and Weatherfield is part of Manchester. It did feel sort of overdue that we did this and represented modern Manchester a bit more accurately.”

Iain has insisted that Corrie favourite Norris, played by Malcolm Hebden, is not leaving the show and the door has also been left open for the return of Emily, played by Eileen Derbyshire.

The new family will walk into Weatherfield after Edison, a no-nonsense former property developer turned builder, and his cheeky-chappy older son Michael, 27, buy the the builder’s yard from the Grimshaws.

Doting mum Aggie is a vivacious pharmacy assistant and their brooding youngest son James, 19, is a talented footballer playing for Weatherfield County who will reveal that he’s gay in a storyline aimed at tackling homophobia in sport.

The Bailey family, who move in next door to the Barlows, soon make themselves at home in Weatherfield while initially rubbing a few people up the wrong way but ending up making firm friends within the community.

Iain explained: “Parents Edison and Aggie are soulmates who, underneath the banter, will stick up for each other and defend their boys when the going gets tough.

“Eldest son Michael is an exuberant, loveable dreamer with a huge heart and is the glue that holds the family together.

“James is Michael’s younger brother and best mate, who is a sensitive lad with a secret that he fears will throw his family into turmoil and impact on his career.

“The four actors we’ve cast are all individually brilliant but together they have a truly incredible chemistry. I can’t wait for them to hit the screen!”

Ed soon hits it off with street stalwart Ken Barlow and café owner Roy Cropper while bubbly Aggie befriends Liz McDonald and Eileen Grimshaw.

Michael and his brother become pals with Steve, Peter and Tim and James forms a close friendship with Bethany Platt played by Lucy Fallon.

It will also emerge that the Baileys have a middle sibling called Diana, named after Princess Diana, who has not yet been cast.

Trevor said: “I have never allowed myself to imagine being part of such a massive icon in television history. I grew up with Ena Sharples, Stan and Hilda Ogden and Elsie Tanner as did my family, my neighbourhood and the entire country.

“To look at a script where Edison Bailey is chatting away with Ken Barlow couldn’t be any more humbling and a bit scary.”

Lorna, who had eight-year stint in Doctors playing Mrs Tembe and directing, said about her new role: “I am absolutely thrilled to be joining this iconic show.

“I have grown up watching Coronation Street. It’s the meat and two veg of the nation’s soap diet. A staple, that has been apart of my family for more years than I care to remember. I’ve got my knife and fork at the ready…lets tuck in!”

Nathan, who is joining the show after appearing in Dreamgirls and Miss Saigon in the West End, said: “I’m so grateful for this opportunity to join Coronation Street and be a part of this show. I’m thrilled to be a member of the Bailey family and excited to explore the difficulties James may face along the way.”
