A famous Hull night spot is getting a new owner and says it will attract “global stars” to its newly refurbished venue.

DJV Entertainment has announced the takeover of Funktion nightclub and will officially open and operate under the banner “The Tower” from December 15.

The company’s director Terry Spamer wants to bring new acts, bands, DJs and artists to perform at the century-old Hull city centre venue.

Terry had previously put on club nights at the Anlaby Road club – which is in need of a spruce up before the club reopens again.

He said: “People nowadays don’t go out clubbing every single weekend so we are mindful that we only want to open on our own themed nights.

“Djs on the global circuit won’t just come to any bar or club, it needs to stand out, and The Tower will do just that. It’s such a wonderful venue and we want big names to come to the city – so they need a fantastic venue.

“It’s so close to the train station and it’s what you see when you come in to Hull so it would have been a shame to just let the club go to waste.”

Terry, who previously booked out the same venue for his Deja Vu nights, said he wanted to bring “a range of special themed nights” to Hull like he has replicated with a venue in Leeds.

“We are looking at bringing big global brands to Hull and put Hull on the map,” added Terry.

The club has had many makeovers over the years – this was Arthur Wilder’s £1.5m tropical-themed attempt in 2005.

The former cinema venue, previously famous for the Hull phrase ‘Tower for an hour’ after it was converted into a club in 1983, celebrated its 104th birthday this year.

However, Terry is hoping that “some TLC will go a long way”.

He added: “We’re not coming in and doing a massive million pound refurbishment, and it won’t be overnight, but we’re hoping to progressively improve it as a gig venue.”

Speaking on Monday, the former occupier said: “To be honest the building is falling apart, and it’s in the wrong part of town to keep it open all the time.”

It will reopen with Lovely Laura, famous for playing the Saxophone at Ibiza Rocks, on December 15.
