The company behind a well-known organic coffee shop in Beverley town centre has gone bust.

Filmore and Union, which has 17 branches in Yorkshire and the North East including one in Saturday Market, has been forced to appoint administrators after the chain suffered from severe cash flow problems and poor trading conditions.

The chain employs around 230 people and plans have already been announced to sell the production kitchen and 10 of its 17 stores, including the one in Beverley.

It is hoped that this will save 150 jobs but the seven remaining sites in places like York, Harrogate and Skipton have been forced to close permanently, resulting in 80 job losses.

The remaining sites which survived the cut have been sold to Coffeesmiths Collective Ltd with the one of the administrators, Phil Pierce, confirming that it was not possible to secure the sale of all the sites.

Mr Pierce, a partner at specialist business advisory firm FRP Advisory LLP, said: “Filmore and Union is a well-known and popular independent chain with a strong reputation across the North of England.

“We are pleased to have been able to secure a deal which crucially protects a large number of jobs in the local area and will help to maximise returns for creditors. We wish the team at Coffeesmiths Collective all the best as they continue to expand their business.

Filmore and Union is the brainchild of Adele Ashley, a former wellness clinic owner who was frustrated by the lack of natural, wholesome food and drink that could be enjoyed in a relaxed, cosy setting on local high streets.

The brand is known for its healthy menu including its gluten-free cakes, breakfasts, brunches and afternoon teas.
