Rickie Lambert enjoyed his best times in football with Southampton
The 35-year-old has called it quits after a 19-year playing career which included spells in the Premier League with Southampton and Liverpool as well as 11 international caps.
Lambert has been beset by injury problems in recent seasons and has been without a club since leaving Championship outfit Cardiff City in the summer.
A statement from Lambert read: “I feel lucky to have been involved in this sport for as long as I have. I have had some ups and downs in my career but to have represented clubs like Southampton, Liverpool and playing for my country in a World Cup were beyond my wildest dreams.
“I would like to thank the fans of all the clubs I have for but especially at Southampton where I enjoyed my best years as a football and had a special relationship with everyone connected to the club.”
