Up to two guards – a man and woman – are currently being held hostage by an unnamed inmate with a makeshift weapon at Alençon – Condé-sur-Sarthe, in the Orne. The hostage situation is reported to have happened when the prisoners’ meals were served, according to local news reports. A conflicting report states it happened when the guards tried to transfer the inmate to another prison.
Armed police are at the scene in northern France.
They are currently looking access to the prison.
The prison has since been evacuated following the incident, which occurred at 7.40pm.
The incident comes three months after a terror attack happened in the same location.
French prison inmate Michael Chiolo was shot dead after stabbing two guards in an attack at the same prison.
The stabbings were called a terror attack by the French government.
After the stabbing in March, Chiolo, who shouted Allahu Akbar before butchering the victims, barricaded himself and his partner in a room in the prison.
He told officers he was wearing an explosive belt, which turned out to be false information.
He had been serving a 30-year prison sentence.
This is a breaking news story.
