NATURAL WONDERS: Hikers hit the trail naked for Nude Hiking Day

Nude Hiking Day, also known as Hike Naked Day, is reportedly marked by hikers around the world on the summer solstice.

It’s a simple concept – strip down to your birthday suit, hit the trails and feel closer to nature as a result.

But it worried authorities in the US state of Colorado so much they gave hikers a public warning.

“We ask them to leave or put on clothing,” said Lauren Truitt of Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

She told local broadcaster Denver7 news parks were preserving a family atmosphere.

Anyone caught in the buff could be issued with a warning or a ticket by park rangers, she said.

Nonetheless, a quick check on the image-sharing site Instagram shows plenty of people defying the warning.

Pictures show people getting their kit off in thew woods of Colorado, California, Connecticut, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

One naked hiker wrote: “Be confident in the skin you are in, that is the only body you will ever have, the only place you will ever be solely yours.

“Even if you’ll never be as skinny as those super models, or the beauty that makes everyone stare, you can be beautiful in your own way.”

Leah Pappajohn, who climbed the El Capitan rock formation in Yosemite National Park, California, insisted the nudity was legal.

She told Men’s Journal “nudity is legal in national parks” as long as it’s not done to “incite or satisfy sexual arousal”.

The US Bureau of Land Management said it would only ticket naked visitors whose nudity was a “nuisance”.
