A Hull schoolboy’s story about a boy who once lived with dragons is set to be turned into a children’s bedtime story book.
Luka Coenen, 14, entered a recent competition run by Hallmark Hotels to have his words become part of a story book that will be available to families in every Hallmark Hotel later this year.
Luka’s 300-word creative bedtime story, The Dragon Child, tells the tale of a boy who once lived with dragons.
The judging process was led by author and CBBC Teletubbies scriptwriter, Gordon Volke, who said The Dragon Child would make a “fantastic addition” to the storybook.
He said: “Luka’s story is lovely and full of believable emotions. I must congratulate Luka on creating such a moving narrative in such a short space.

“Luka is a worthy author for the bedtime story book and I look forward to reading more of his work in the future.”
Luka is “very excited” about being awarded a place in the book, along with other young authors across the UK.
He said: “It’s such a surreal experience and I didn’t believe that I would come this far. I wrote the story to help children whose parents aren’t with them anymore and I want to show them that they’re very much loved.”
As an accredited author of the bedtime storybook, Luka will also receive his very own copy to treasure.
As the competition enters its final stages, Hallmark Hotels will announce one winner from each age category as well as an overall winner this month.
Each winner will be invited to spend the afternoon at a Hallmark Hotel to sit down with illustrator, Julian Stelfox, where they will help design illustrations that will appear alongside their story in the final book.
Winners will also receive £50 of Waterstones vouchers and a one-night stay at a Hallmark Hotel for all the family.
Serena Walters, general manager at Hallmark Hotel Hull said: “We’ve had such a fantastic response. It’s great to see so many budding young writers putting pen to paper and sharing their creative stories.
“It’s great to know that someone from Hull has made the cut and we’ll be sure to point out their story to all our younger guests who stay with us at the hotel in the future.”
