The migrants reportedly set fire to mattresses, broke down doors and climbed over a fence at the Ponte Galeria Repatriation Detention Centre in Rome. The revolt took place at 9.30pm on Friday, according to Il Messaggero. One of the group is believed to be a man from Algeria who is also being monitored by the an Italian Anti-Terrorism team.

One of the group was said to have complained about the food and the fact that very few phones were available.

Some of the migrants in the centre were able to reach the outside of the building, which is located near Fiumicino International Airport.

They were able to climb over the wall and disappear.

But others were blocked from leaving by guards.

The riot was announced by the Sap, the autonomous police union.

They said in a statement that they expressed solidarity with the colleagues of the mobile department and the immigration office who had to face the violence at the prison.

The man suspected of violent radicalisation is on a list of 478 people being monitored for terrorism risk by NIC, the central investigative unit of the police.

The man had just finished serving his sentence in prison for other crimes, which have not been revealed.

But during his stay in the Roman prison he is said to have became radicalised to ISIS.
