KLOPP KNOT

Klopp was Gotze’s manager at Dortmund between 2009 and 2013, but it wasn’t just football advice that he gave to the player…

Borussia Dortmund ace Mario Gotze has recalled the hilarious tale which saw former manager Jurgen Klopp claim the player might need a hair transplant in the future.

Klopp managed Gotze for four years at the Westfalenstadion, handing the attacking midfielder his debut for the club at the tender age of 17.

Writing in The Players’ Tribune, the Germany international who scored the winning goal at the 2014 World Cup final, revealed how his former Dortmund boss had a ‘very serious side‘.

However, Klopp is perhaps better known for his jokes on and off the pitch and Gotze revealed how he was on form even when he was getting a hair transplant done.

Klopp’s hair transplant was big news in Germany and Gotze recalled how he bumped into his then-manager when he was getting his new lid.

Gotze said: “I will never forget the time I ran into him in Dusseldorf during the summer. He was going to see the specialist there to have his hair transplant done.

“This became big news in Germany, but he was so funny about it. He was smiling, telling me all about it — how cool it was going to look and everything.

“And then as he was leaving, he just gave me a wink and he said, ‘Mario, don’t worry, I will save the phone number.’

“I said, ‘What do you mean?’

“He said, ‘The doctor’s number. I’ll save it for you. In a few years, you might need it.’

“Then he laughed and walked off. Most people would be embarrassed or not say anything, but he didn’t care at all.

“He was such a funny and positive influence on everyone around him.”
