He replaces Andres Iniesta, who left the club at the end of the last campaign
Lionel Messi has been appointed as Barcelona’s new club captain.
The Argentinian superstar will lead the Blaugrana from the 2018/19 season onwards, following the departure of previous captain, Andres Iniesta.
Barcelona will have three vice-captains, the first one being Sergio Busquets, the second being Gerard Pique and the third being Sergi Roberto.
All four are products of the club’s youth system – La Masia.
Messi has been the side’s second captain since Xavi’s departure in 2015.
He has also been Argentina’s leader since 2011, when given the roll by Alejandro Sabella.
In his highly-decorated Barcelona career to date, Messi has won nine LaLiga titles, six Copa del Rey crowns and four Champions League trophies.
