Manchester United FC transfer news: Where does Jose Mourinho need to strengthen to challenge Pep Guardiola and Manchester City?

The performances of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have left a lot to be desired this season. Although Smalling looked to be progressing into the international quality defender many had hoped under Louis van Gaal, he has since gone backwards under Mourinho. As well as Smalling’s shortcomings, Jones is still far too inconsistent to be considered good enough for United. The Premier League title race seems to be over already, with runaway leaders Manchester City steamrolling their way to the top of the league.

Pep Guardiola’s side are 16 points clear of city rivals United, and have managed to combine style with substance in their pursuit of the title.

Critics are running out of superlatives to throw at the Citizens, as their free-flowing football continues to dazzle.

After defeats to Tottenham and Newcastle, the former Chelsea boss has already started looking to next season – practically admitting defeat in his chase for the title.

So where do the Red Devils need to strengthen before next season to be able to match City?
