In July last year, Donald Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh to become an associate justice of the US Supreme Court after Anthony Kennedy retired. Ms Blasey Ford alleged Mr Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her in Bethesda, Maryland when they were teenagers. Another two women came out to accuse Mr Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct which resulting a hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee which Ms Blasey Ford testified in front of.

As reported by the New York Post, the book ‘Justice on Trial: The Kavanaugh Confirmation and the Future of the Supreme Court’ by Mollie Hemingway and Carrie Severino claims Mrs Trump remarked: “You know that woman is lying, don’t you?”

Mr Kavanaugh denied all accusations and the Senate voted 50-48 to appoint following an additional FBI investigation and report which was not publicly released.

The FBI was criticised by some Democrats for their report which spoke to ten people including Ms Blasey Ford, a psychology professor at Palo Alto University, and Deborah Ramirez, who claimed Mr Kavanaugh exposed himself to her while they studied at Yale University.

The third accuser is Julie Swetnick, a former government employee, who said she had gone to parties at high school where Mr Kavanaugh and childhood friend Mark Judge also attended and it was common for boys to spike or drug the drinks of girls who attended.

It is not known if Ms Swetnick was interviewed by the FBI.

Professor Blasey Ford’s accusation alleged Mr Judge was in the room when her assault took place.

Mr Kavanaugh was sworn in during early October, after having the smallest amount of Senators supporting his nomination at just 51.02 percent.

His term of law clerks is all-female, a first for a Supreme Court Justice.

The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Officer has not announced plans to bring criminal charges against Mr Kavanaugh over the incident which is alleged to have taken place in 1983.

Maryland has no statute of limitations on murder and rape, but it does so for lesser offences.

For sexual abuse, misdemeanour offences must have charges filed within a year of the offence to be prosecuted but there is no statute for felony sexual offences.

Ms Hemingway is a political commentator who contributes to Fox News and has been described as being a staunch Mr Trump supporter.

Ms Severino is a former clerk to US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
