Posties could cause havoc with Christmas delivers if strike action over pay and working conditions goes ahead.

Royal Mail staff are reportedly expected to walk out at the busiest time of year or bring havoc during Black Friday sales at the end of November.

The walk comes as the 505-year-old company awaits results of a strike ballot from the Communication Workers Union (CWU) on Tuesday.

David Ward, the General Secretary of the CWU said: “We are confident our members will deliver a massive yes vote.

“They know this is the fight of our lives – to defend their jobs but also the service they provide.”

Bosses fear the company may scrap rules and force staff to deliver to every UK address six days a week.

The Sunday Times said dropping a five-day week could cost the force 20,000 jobs .

In 2015 the Royal mail attempted to save money by issuing 70,000 scanners to post workers.

The introduction was met by anger from the union who claimed the devices could track staff.

The result of the ballot could lead to the first national walkout in more than 10 years – and the first since it was privatist in 2013.

In a statement confirming receipt of the notice, a Royal Mail spokesman said: “Royal Mail (RMG.L) confirms it has received formal notice from CWU that it intends to ballot its members for industrial action.

“Under the terms of the notice, all CWU members (other than those working in Royal Mail Property and Facilities Solutions) will be balloted.

“The earliest opening date of the ballot will be 24 September 2019.

“A ballot result for industrial action does not necessarily mean there will be industrial action.

“No industrial action can be taken before the conclusion of our mediation period.

“We will continue to engage in the agreed dispute resolution processes set out in the Agenda for Growth

“We will be urging our colleagues to vote ‘no’ in the upcoming ballot. Industrial action – or the threat of it – undermines the trust of our customers.

“It makes it harder for Royal Mail to pay for the existing industry-leading terms and conditions it provides.

“Royal Mail is committed to further talks as a matter of urgency. We believe there are no grounds for industrial action.

“We remain committed to open and constructive engagement with the CWU.

“We all want a successful and sustainable company that provides good quality jobs, fairness in workloads, and continues delivering a sustainable Universal Service.”
