Shkodran Mustafi has been subject to derision by Arsenal fans for his performances on the pitch on several occasions.

The defender has developed a reputation as a player prone to an error.

He revealed in an emotional interview last month he has become ‘haunted’ by some of the ‘irrational’ criticism he’s received from Arsenal fans.

“I am self-critical enough to see that I made those mistakes. And I can cope with harsh criticism.

“But the criticism has become escalated and irrational. I have become a target. At some point, people even blamed me for a defeat I had not played at all.”

He cuts a figure bereft of confidence so it’s no surprise he’s been a fringe player for most of the season.

However, he was given the nod by manager Unai Emery and started for Arsenal in their Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool on Wednesday night.

It was a classic, finishing 5-5 in normal time before going to penalties which Liverpool won 5-4.

Liverpool’s first goal was a particularly bad moment for Mustafi, as the German turned Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross into his own net.

After the game, Mustafi took to Twitter and said: “It’s been a hard battle at Anfield and it did not help that I let the team to to start with but we fought back.

“Unlucky in the end by losing on penalties.”

When players take to social media after losing a match, it can be a pretty cruel place, but many fans responded with words of encouragement for Mustafi this time around.

Below you can see some of the best messages of support from these Arsenal fans.

It’s a far cry from the reception Granit Xhaka received when he was substituted during their draw at Crystal Palace last weekend, which saw the midfielder cup his hand to his ear and swear at the Arsenal fans.

No apology has come from the midfielder despite Emery and Josh Kroenke suggesting he do so.

Meanwhile, Gunners forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang appeared to be on the receiving end of abuse from some fans in the street as he drove through London after the same game.
