A walk in the countryside with the kids in high spirits can be like a journey into an alternative existence. For a few precious hours we adults can experience the natural world through their eyes. Without them, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, flower fairies and talking trees are unlikely to put in an appearance. 

Screams of delight, doggy barks, a race to the nearest stile – all are an escape from a world that can sometimes seem as mundane to the adults who inhabit it as the kids who mock it. Adult-only walks are uplifting, but they are also full of conversations that can safely be stowed in a compartment that kids call “Boorrring!!!” For a while, at least, grown-up concerns can legitimately be vetoed.
