A Newland Avenue bar has been brought back to life after it was taken by new owners.

Jordan Gow, 24, and Chloe Poole, 27, have opened The Boathouse after the bar and restaurant suddenly closed early in the New Year.

Jordan, who is also head chef of The Boathouse, has been renovating the building with Chloe in order to create a new feel for the restaurant.

“We have been open for the past couple of nights for drinks and we’ve seen lots of passing trade,” he said.

“The owners before us told us they had to close because there was no footfall but that hasn’t been the case at all, so I think it’s just how you present yourself as a business.”

Originally from Scunthorpe, Jordan was looking in several areas of the city until he saw The Boathouse was up for sale, and a chance dining experience at another city business spurred him on to create a new menu.

“The burgers we had were okay, but more emphasis had been put on the toppings and dressings rather than the meat itself,” said Jordan.

“I know I can provide customers with better. I’ve worked in many places and worked so hard for someone else’s gain, and I realised it was time to work for myself and follow my passion.

“We’ve just finished developing a new menu and we’re focusing on gourmet burgers but at an affordable price. There will be toppings like pulled pork, mac’n’cheese, pulled brisket and chicken fajita, as well as triple-cooked chips.

“We’re also going to be looking at food challenges using my homemade chicken wings, as well as offers.”

Jordan and Chloe got the keys for the restaurant in February, and have spent the past weeks renovating the interior and toilets, as well as stocking the bar with fresh ingredients for cocktails.

“The toilets were a dive before so we’ve re-tiled them all and brightened them up a bit,” said Jordan.

“We’ve spruced up the inside and changed all the seating, and we’re going to be concentrating on great cocktails.

“For me, cocktails are just as important as the food we put out, so all of the bar staff are being trained in what makes a great drink.”

The Boathouse hit the headlines in January 2019 after former employees claimed they were not being paid by the previous owner, but Jordan is keen for people to know he is not connected with the past owners in any way.

“We are new owners entering our first business together and we want to bring more trade to Newland Avenue”, he said.

The Boathouse will be open from 10am to midnight from Monday and Friday and until 2am on Saturdays. The restaurant will be closed on Sundays.
