Hello and welcome to our blog bringing you live coverage of Newcastle United’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

It’s a 4:30pm kick-off down at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and it’s the Magpies’ second away game of the new season.

Having been beaten by Arsenal at St James’ Park on the opening weekend, Steve Bruce is still searching for his first win in the league as head coach after a dismal showing at Norwich City last weekend.

Interest is on Bruce’s starting XI with Allan Saint-Maximin set to return to the squad as well as question marks over Bruce’s preferred 5-3-2 formation.

You can follow all the build-up, team news, live coverage, and post-game analysis right here.

Joelinton’s goal gives United the lead at HT.

Goes without saying, but the best half of football #nufc have played under Steve Bruce. Good shape, more cohesion, playing with heart and hard to break down – which has frustrated Spurs and the crowd. Crucially, have taken their chance, too. Big 45 minutes ahead .

Dubravka gets away with it…

The ball comes in from the left, and Dubravka gets a hand to it.

It drops to Moura – who fires wide from close range. Lucky for NUFC.

Almiron is very fortunate…

United pass their way out of trouble, and the ball lands at the feet of Almiron who decides to try and dribble from just outside of his own box.

He’s tackled by Rose, and Spurs go on the attack – Longstaff needed to clear the cross.

Son fires wide…

The striker hits one at goal from 20 yards, but drags it wide.

NUFC need to hold onto HT

What a moment. It was at a similar stage of Newcastle’s defeat to Norwich that Joelinton had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock – but headed wide. Here, the Brazilian showed ice-cool composure to slot home following a brilliant lofted ball from Christian Atsu, who has not played a game for club or country since June 29.

The home Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has largely been silenced with the away end now belting out ‘Who’s that team called United?’ on repeat. There is a long way to go but Newcastle have something to defend now having kept their shape throughout this first half hour. Getting to half-time now is the key.

Dummett with an important touch…

The Geordie born defender has to get something to this cross as Moura is behind him – he does just that. Heads away.

33 mins: DUBRAVKA! SAVE!

Great save from Dubravka. He has to be strong to the tip ball up and away from a box full of players. It was Son with the effort.

32 mins: TOT 0-1 NEWAndrew Musgrove

What on earth was Krafth doing?

Spurs are on the attack, and Schar gets his head to the ball. Instead of clearing it, Krafth decides to head it twice and half-kick it away. Rose then goes down, no penalty. Lucky escape.

Jermaine Jenas on NUFC’s goal…

Speaking on BBC 5 Live.

I honestly do not know what is going through Davinson Sanchez mind here, it is ridiculous defending. He does not look once where the Newcastle players are.

He does not look behind him. The finish from Joelinton is sublime. It’s brilliant from Newcastle, shocking from Tottenham.

GOAL! NUFC! JOELINTON

Joelinton collects Atsu’s cross – one touch, bang. It was lovely bit of play by NUFC – a dozen or so passes between the defence/midfield before Ritchie feeds Atsu. The winger was given far too much time to chip the ball into the box.

Joelinton controls – it looks a bad touch – but he’s composed to curl home. Lovely.

The #nufc fans going crazy in the sunshine here. Joelinton points to the skies! #nufc lead in the capital.

NUFC waste corner…

United player the corner short, and up losing it allowing Spurs on the counter.

Lascelles has to clear the ball behind for a corner – that’s collected by Dubravka.

23 mins: LONGSTAFF SAVED!

A long ball by Schar is taken down by Joelinton, he plays in Longstaff who drives at goal – Lloris tips over.

Fabian Schar – what a challenge…

Spurs are livid, and feel they should have had a penalty after a challenge by Fabian Schar on Son.

It was last-ditch slide in, looks like he got the ball though.

18 mins: TOT 0-0 NEWKEY EVENT

18 mins: Verdict so far…

It was not going to take much – but this has been a much better start from Newcastle United after what happened at Norwich eight days’ previously.

At Carrow Road, Newcastle gifted Daniel Farke’s side a host of chances in the opening quarter of an hour – Todd Cantwell and Teemu Pukki both forced Martin Dubravka into fine stops – but Steve Bruce’s side have looked a lot more solid here.

Spurs are not finding it easy to break down what is essentially a 5-4-1, with Miguel Almiron and Christian Atsu encouraged to support Joelinton when Newcastle counter.

Allan Saint-Maximin’s injury is a big blow, as he has that pace and x-factor to give the Magpies an important outlet when transitioning from defence to attack, but the players will quietly take some confidence from this start. Even if Spurs have dominated possession.

Allan Saint-Maximin is OFF, and Christian Atsu is ON.

Allan Saint-Maximin to come OFF

ASM is down on the turf, and Christian Atsu is coming on.

15 mins: TOT 0-0 NEWAndrew Musgrove

The possession…

Spurs have had 81 per-cent of the possession.

12 mins: TOT 0-0 NEWAndrew Musgrove

Good idea by NUFC…

United have a free-kick about 40-45 yards out – Ritchie takes it quickly, and sends ASM down the left but he can’t control it and actually knocks it out.

11 mins: TOT 0-0 NEWAndrew Musgrove

Winks is booked…

First real burst of speed from Miguel Almiron but his shirt is pulled by Harry Winks who gets a booking from Mike Dean.

Almiron was just approaching the halfway line.

Nine minutes: TOT 0-0 NEWAndrew Musgrove

How do NUFC set-up?

Without the ball, #nufc look like a 5-4-1, with Almiron and Saint-Maximin in their own half when Spurs are on attack. When countering, though, they are obviously looking to link-up with Joelinton.

CIARAN KELLY

It’s all Spurs…

As you might expect, it’s all spurs so far. United are defending deep in an attempt to contain Tottenham.

NUFC formation

NUFC formation:

Without the ball, #nufc look like a 5-4-1, with Almiron and Saint-Maximin in their own half when Spurs are on attack. When countering, though, they are obviously looking to link-up with Joelinton. Quickly. First anti-Ashley chant goes up from the away end after 2 minutes

Six minutes: TOT 0-0 NEWAndrew Musgrove

Newcastle deal with Spurs corner…

Ritchie heads the ball out, and the resulting corner is cleared by Joelinton for another corner.

Three minutes: TOT 0-0 NEWAndrew Musgrove

Longstaff loses the ball

Fabian Schar has to get across to clear the ball from the NUFC box after Sean Longstaff is caught with the ball. United can’t afford to let that happen again.

Two mins: TOT 0-0 NEWAndrew Musgrove

Kratfh gets a foot in…

Krafth looks set for another tiring day – he looks like he’s beaten by Son but luckily recovers, and clears.

KICK-OFF: TOT 0-0 NEWAndrew Musgrove

And we’re under-way…

It’s boiling down at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It’s going to be a tiring day for all the players.

KICK-OFF APPROACHING: PLAYERS ON THE PITCHAndrew Musgrove

Can NUFC get the win?

Steve Bruce certainly needs it.

Kick-off is just moments away.

Bruce to Sky

Steve Bruce to Sky:

I think everything nowadays is dissected. The simple fact is we didn’t play well enough on the day – end of story. Of course there’s the dissection after that. What better place to come and play than Spurs against one of the best players and one of the best managers, a great stadium. What a place to perform.

The intention is the changes will lift the team. We have to be a bit careful about Longy because of his knee injury. Unfortunately Allan picked up a hamstring just a few days after he joined us so this is the first week. Let’s hope he give us something and cause them a few problems.

We’ve slightly changed our shape, very slightly. Hopefully we can cause them a few problems. There’s a lot said about formations but it’s about how we perform.
