Just a few months ago, customers would avoid Vegas Green Bay after the Preston Road takeaway got a one-star food hygiene rating.
Fast forward to the present day and after a heavy investment, the east Hull food outlet is determined to win back its former regulars after bagging itself a new top rating of five.
It was no easy or cheap task but bosses at Vegas Green Bay say they have now righted their wrongs. However, as the saying goes, the proof in the pudding (or the pizza in this case) is in the eating.
As someone who lives in west Hull, Vegas Green Bay would not be the first place I’d go to for pizzas and kebabs, and because I lived so far away it would not let me order from there on Just Eat.
I was having some trouble with the app in that it wouldn’t let me order food for collection so I decided to call up the takeaway direct.
After explaining the troubles I was having, staff there were able to tell me how long it would take for them to cook the food and explained that I would be able to pay by card or in cash upon collection.
I know customer service doesn’t come into food hygiene ratings but staff answering the phone certainly gave me a five-star treatment.
The man I was speaking to was patient with good manners, which for me makes a huge difference when it comes to ordering food.
After heading over to east Hull, I picked up a 12in Hawaiian pizza (£7.30), a 10in garlic bread (£2.70) and a BBQ chicken wrap, which came with fries covered in American Chip Spice and a can of pop (£5.50).
It was a pretty gargantuan feast but after a long day at work and a tennis match I was ready to indulge.
I love a good Hawaiian pizza and, somewhat controversially, I am a huge believer that pineapples do belong on pizzas.
And this one did not disappoint.
It was loaded with cheese and on a par with anything I’ve ever had from the likes of Dominos and other more well-known food chains.
I unashamedly scoffed the lot and had some of the garlic bread in between. As I expected, it came as a garlic bread pizza – something which I’m not a huge fan of as I believe it is sometimes just too much and I find that you lose a lot of the flavour.
However, they weren’t shy on the garlic and it was a nice side dish to go with the pizza.
After feasting on the garlic bread and the pizza, I realised I had no room for the wrap and chips but I did save them for the following day.
The look of it was pretty underwhelming and for £5.50 I did feel it was quite a lot of money for what it was but the chicken was succulent and you can’t go wrong with chicken in lashings of BBQ sauce.

So the big question is does Vegas Green Bay live up to its new five-star rating? In short, not quite – but it’s almost there.
The food was not exceptional but it was very tasty and a feast from there would be perfect for a night in in front of the TV, especially if you live in the Preston Road area of east Hull.
